John Smout, director of JS Design, originally trained as an architect but went on to sculpt and model in the old fashioned way for films and museums - with real materials for real exhibits in the real world - as some of the pictures in this section show.
Nowdays a computer model is often used to visualise what something will look like, such as a new building, signage or an exhibition stand. Or a new package, point of sale item or product perhaps.
Sometimes a computer model is made to provide the basis of a logo or illustration.
"Thinking in the round is a specialist skill, not natural to many designers used to working on flat surfaces."
"To be able to visualise what something might look like from all angles in the real world is a valuable tool."
